Strelka Institute for Architecture, Media & Design Art Centre

Offline map Google map (www.strelkainstitute.ru; Bersenevskaya nab 14/5; Kropotkinskaya) This Institute for Media, Architecture and Design is the focal point of the new development at the Red October chocolate factory. Aside from the course offerings and the popular bar, Strelka promises to give Moscow a healthy dose of contemporary culture, hosting lectures, workshops, film screenings and concerts.

Moscow International House of Music Classical Music

Offline map Google map ( 495-730 1011; www.mmdm.ru; Kosmodamianskaya nab 52/8; tickets R200-2000; Paveletskaya) This graceful, modern, glass building has three halls, including Svetlanov Hall, which holds the largest organ in Russia. Needless to say, organ concerts held here are impressive. This is the usual venue for performances by the National Philharmonic of Russia ( 495-730 3778; www.nfor.ru, in Russian) , a privately financed and highly lauded classical-music organisation. Founded in 1991, the symphony is directed and conducted by the esteemed Vladimir Spivakov.

Dome Cinema

Offline map Google map (www.domebar.com; Bersenevsky per 3/10; noon-midnight Sun-Thu, noon-6am Fri & Sat; Kropotkinskaya) This place is just as arty and hip as any other place in the Red October complex, offering reasonably priced, creative food and cool-vibe music. What makes it stand out is the ‘cinema-lounge’ – a 60-seat screening room, where art flicks and foreign films are shown in the evenings (free with your order).

Garage Club Nightclub

Offline map Google map ( www.garageclub.ru; Brodnikov per 8; 24hr; Polyanka) Not to be confused with the art gallery, this is the reincarnation of a Yeltsin-era nightclub. Nowadays, it’s the place to be on Wednesday and Sunday nights, if you want to strut your R&B stuff on the dance floor. It also gets packed in the early morning hours of the weekend (technically Saturday and Sunday), when the clubbing crowd comes for the famous ‘after party’. At other times, it’s just a cool place to get comfortable in a car seat and have a few drinks. This is the only place in Moscow you can drink and drive.

Oliver Bikes Cycling

Offline map Google map ( www.bikerentalmoscow.com; Pyatnitskaya ul 2; 1hr/24hr R200/700; noon-10pm Mon-Fri, 10am-10pm Sat & Sun; Novokuznetskaya) Oliver rents all kinds of two-wheeled vehicles, including cruisers, mountain bikes, folding bikes and tandem bikes, all of which are in excellent condition. The place is conveniently located for bike rides along the Moscow River, in Gorky Park, Neskuchny Garden and Vorobyovy Gory Nature Preserve. Ride carefully!

Gorky Park Skating Rink Ice Skating

Offline map Google map ( ul Krymsky val; adult/child R80/20; 10am-10pm; Park Kultury) When the temperatures drop, Gorky Park becomes a winter wonderland. The ponds are flooded, turning the park into the city’s biggest ice-skating rink. Tracks are created for cross-country skiers to circumnavigate the park. Ice skates and cross-country skis are available to rent (R100 to R200 per hour). Bring your passport.
